Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils)
- 3 cups water
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp red chili powder
- 1 tbsp ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- ½ tsp garam masala (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Wash and Cook the Dal
- Rinse the moong dal thoroughly under running water.
- Add dal, water, turmeric, and a little salt to a pressure cooker.
- Cook for 2–3 whistles or until the dal becomes soft.
- Mash lightly and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Tadka (Tempering)
- Heat ghee or oil in a pan.
- Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden.
- Stir in ginger-garlic paste and green chilies.
- Add tomatoes, red chili powder, and cook until soft.
Step 3: Combine
- Pour the cooked dal into the pan.
- Mix well and simmer for 5–7 minutes.
- Add garam masala if desired.
- Adjust salt and consistency with water.
Step 4: Garnish and Serve
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or jeera rice.
